Spangler Ceramics

My specialty is wheel-thrown high fire pottery. High temperature glazes produce the color depth that I’m looking for in my work. I like to make pieces that are gestural and quiet in form but also bright and bold in finish.
Chinese Sung porcelain, ancient bronzes, and Japanese wood-fired stoneware inspire me.
Whatever my ceramic concept, the clay has its own influence that affects the look & spirit of a piece. Many times the finished bowl or vase differs from my expectations. The nuances of the glaze firing has a final say in the work. The piece can push back from my intention and take me to new directions of glazing or form. The process of discovery pulls me into different techniques to explore.
Pottery making is beguiling, beautiful, and satisfying. It has been pulling me into it’s creative muse for over 45 years.
